Ensure boat is properly cleaned and all papers and gear are ready. Cabins and lockers should be clear of gear and personal items. If bottom inspection is needed make arrangements with the marina beforehand to haul the vessel. In addition, arrange for a captain to be available for a limited trial run.
It is up to you to prepare the boat for inspection. This involved cleaning and any dismantling of interior flooring or ceiling to gain access for inspection.
The surveyor should never be asked to prepare the boat for inspection. The surveyor may request minor dismantling of interior flooring, ceilings, below water line fasteners, and other parts to gain access for inspection. All required dismantling should be done by a qualified individual. It is the responsibility of the person ordering the survey to arrange and facilitate this.
Written authorization from the owner may be needed to
board and or remove part of the vessel.
The surveyor once retained reports to you and not any outside parties. They are there to protect your interests.
Can I be present at the boat during the survey?
You are entitled and encouraged to come aboard during inspection. As I complete my inspection, I will point out areas on concern and areas that are satisfactory. I can explain what each of these problems mean and how severe they are. I will also be able to provide advise upon the best course of action depending on the situation at hand.
How much time does a marine survey take?
Every marine survey is different. A normal survey could take between five and eight hours. This is heavily dependent on the size and condition of the boat surveyed. Things that can affect survey time are boat cleanliness, condition, systems installed, clutter, etc. I will ensure each survey is thorough regardless of condition by testing, photographing, and making notes.
What are you looking for when surveying my boat?
There are many different things to look for when completing a marine survey. The short answer is I look at everything this involves examining the structural integrity and mechanical/electrical systems. It also is just important to look for present or missing safety equipment, documentation, and the condition of devices onboard.
How long does it take to get my marine survey report?
Like the survey’s time varies, the report time can vary as well. This is dependent on the size and condition of the vessel. This also depends on the type of survey ordered. However, I strive to get your report back as quickly as possible and am always available to message for updates or concerns.
